Redfin Pickeral

Whatever you do dont keep it with a bass!!!! Pickerel are stalk eaters and follow it around for awhile and then ambush it. As you very well know bass destroy the first thing that comes into the tank. Pickerel dont even do good wuith bluegill. Bluegill and other sunfish mistake the pickerels fins as food and eventually will take huge chunks out of the pickerels fins. Red fins are probably best by them selves and as they only get about 10in long you might be able to even do two in 55g. But again they need vegetation and hiding spots. Pickerels act almost like trout in the wild, they are found in wild streams and hang out in pools where there is good cover and spoke very easily.

It was said already but I will also say it, don't keep pickerel with bass. For all the reasons that were already mentioned.

Pickerel will grow as fast as you let them. I collected mine when it was about 1.5-2". Within a month it grew to 4". I was feeding it as many feeders (guppies, rosy reds, collected minnows, ghost shrimp) as it would eat. I have since slowed down on the amount I feed and frequency only feeding him a couple of minnows about twice a week.

$12-15 is going to be the cost to USPS Priority (2-3 days) ship fish. $25 is going to be the cost of USPS Express (next day) shipping. Those are the avg costs as larger fish require larger bags/boxes/more oxygen. It isn't cheap to ship fish. And you want to next day any shipments during the summer as the temperatures are ridiculously high for cool water fish. I would only priority ship if the shipper uses an ice pack and guarantees live arrival. During the cooler months you can get away with priority shipping.

I imagine the larger redfin pickerel costs more as they were probably grown to that size and take up more space than the smaller ones.

wow they got some great stuff there...I love the blue spotted sunfish:eek: ..now I know where next weeks paycheck is going:D

You should deffinitely contact KSI about the Bluespotted sunfish! The fish I get from them are the healthiest I've ever seen and I collect my own fish. The fish I get from them last longer and stay healthier than my own catches. They must be very selective about thier fish.

Ive nticed that after eating a few minnows, my bass slow down and sometimes seem to get full lol. So I think that if I dumped several minnows into the tank the pickeral would get some.

Pickerel are totally docile! They should be kept with equally dicile fish (not bass of any kind). Seriously, bass should not be kept in the same tank as pickerel.

Ive been thinking about getting either the pickeral or a tiger muskie, but both seem to have their + and -. Tigers get huge (but I have a pond) and pickeral just dont seem to be aggressive enough to be lept w/ the bass I already have.

I don't have personal exp with the tiger muskie, but they will probably act the same as the pickerel. They are an ambush style eater as well. You do not want to keep more docile fish with your bass.

I would venture to guess that the muskie's behavior is no different than a pickerel. I even have had experiance with captive tiget muskies and they are pretty docile. It seems a lot of the most toothy, most predatory fish are often the most docile.

If you want something larger than a redfin (or grass) pickerel and smaller than a muskie you could get a chain pickerel.

I would think of it like this give your bass to a friend and get the tiger because of this. If the tiger dosent work out you know what dosent work and can get a bass easier than you can get a tiger muskie.

I thought about grass pickeral, but they still get to like 30," so I might go w/ the tigers, since I have a pond and they are much prettier IMO
