Redtail Cat w/ bumpy whiskers

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
salted and heated still the same so far. Ill give it time. I did notice something interesting that might have started this problem.

I noticed these very small (bugs I believe) on my driftwood. I looked carefully at my cat fish and there on him too. Its somewhat similar looking to ick. although they do not stay attached very well. and are more of an off white color.

I would say they look like very small sesame seeds. Way to small to be able to take a picture of.

By the amount of them on the driftwood I would say thats were they came from. I thought I saw one or two crawling around but it might have been my imagination. I cant see any legs or eyes. They are just kinda like tiny eggs.

Any Ideas???

You could possibly try Quick Cure which kills many parasites. Where did you get the driftwood, and did you treat it before adding it?

I don't see how the 2 could be connected to one another though.

Maybe find a fish vet in the area.

I got the driftwood with the fish tank when I bought it used. It is something that I believe to be locally found. It is a really beautiful piece though. I did not treat it.

I hate adding any chemicals to the tank and will save that as an absolute last resort. I haven't given the heat and salt much time, But that combination has solved a lot of problems for me in the past, espcially ich.

The only way I was thinking they could be related would be if the bugs are biting consuming and or injuring his whiskers causing the bumps.

Ive never heard of a fish doctor around here.. But I would like to find someone with a microscope to get a better look at these things.

Yes, a microscope would be your best bet.

If you didn't treat it, I would take it out and boil it. Do some water changes for some days, and leave the tank bare for a few days until you finish with the drift wood.

The water changes should get majority out of the water, and see if you can't get a close up look of those egg looking things.

I'd fix the bubble problem first however I don't see any obvious signs of nitrogen gas disease on your fish. The whiskers may be reacting however as they are very sensitive. A gas imbalance in the water may also just be causing the fish stress generally. The parasites may also be biting the whiskers causing an immune reaction. I'd expect the catfish to be regularly flicking the whiskers as if agitated if this were the case though.

You can try adding judicious amounts of vitamins to the food to boost the immune system of the fish but the food must be eaten quickly. The most important vitamin in this case would be vit C. Usually you can find vitamins for fish as a fluid in the pond section of a good lfs

Good luck

If I were you I would ask the mods to move this thread to the disease section or repost your question there. You might get more anwers then...or maybe try to PM Lupin....
If you have seen something on the drift wood that you suspect to be the cause I would take it out right away and do a big water change after. I've never seen anything like that though. Good Luck getting it solved.

I dont think the fx5 microbubbles would cause any problems. The filters are clean and have good flow so I dont want to mess with them right now unless the bubbles could cause problems. I just dont know how they would.

I removed all the driftwood and will see if the little tiny bug things disappear.

Heat and salt is still in action for another 2 weeks so hopefully I will see some results with that.

I will see about moving the thread.

You should check out Lupin's Fresh Water disease sticky. There is something called air bubble disease where they can get blisters like the ones your cat has where there is to much nitrogen gas in the water. It says that the fix to to airate the water really well. I vote you check with Lupin directly but it probably wouldn't hurt to look into fixing your bubble problem either.

I will check the sticky. and I just PM'ed lupin. Interesting thoughts on the nitrogen bubbles. Do they make a tester or something I can check with?

My water is airated to the max! Two of the giant dual air pumps tetra 300's. 2 fx5's blasting the surface and a big ehiem also. and 7 feet of airator tubing
