I'm going to be picking up a baby RTC today about 3". The guy at the LFS is giving him to me for 15 bucks! How long can I keep him in a 75 for, and will he be able to live with my 6 inch Peacock Bass?

BTW I'm watching The Hunt for Big Fish with Larry Dahlberg and he's catching some MONSTER RTCs and a few other types of cats.

I'm the redheaded step child on this topic, but i say at least a year in a 75. He should reach between 14-20 " depending on how you feed him. Alot of people feed the crap out of them and grow them quick, i prefer 3-4 times a week and at that rate they grow about 1-2 " a month.

Good luck and start looking for a bigger tank :D

i dont know about you guys, but i'd plan ahead when it comes to RTC's. think about how fun it would be moving 20" rtc out of a 75gal tank. he'll be freakin huge in that thing. i say line ur self up with his new tanks already and move im at small sizes. try to get him to the bigger tank asap. mines already about 8-9" and its only 2 months old. grew him from 1.5". im jus about ready to toss him in the 400gal. i only feed like every other day in small portions jus to keep his tummy round.

I have experience of two rtc's, the bigger of the two going from 8" to 31.5" in 14 months. I did have perfect water quality, a large tank and good quality foods and certainly from a very small initial size like yours at 3" the growth rate will be both linear and very fast. I would say around 3" per month should be expected until it's at least 18", then slowing (a little) from 18-30".
After 30" growth definitely slows down. I certainly don't think you should let yours exceed 15" maximum in your present tank and with such a small gallonage you must be extra vigilant with water changes (both volume and frequency), water quality checks and your filtration system. As far a your peacock bass goes, because the rtc growth rate shall outstrip it so much, even allowing for the 3" size advantage it has now, I would say it would need to be moved within 3 months at the most or it shall probably get eaten, with your red tail being moved to a bigger tank within 4 months. Would agree with Ethnics in terms of moving him as soon as possible, and look at his early growth rates quoted. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the info guys. I already have a huge tank lined up for him at my bait and tackle shop. I'm gonna go pick him up now! I'll get some pictures for you guys.

i got mine about a year ago i have him in a 55g and ive been looking for a new home for him for awile.I got mine at about an inch hes 12inchs now i feed him well and change the water weekly i say you could keep him in the 75 for atleast a year but dont let anthing the same size as him in the tank or its gonna be in his belly my 12inch pleco is the only thing in the tank with mine

not a good Idea to keep your six in peacok you 3in rtc in 6 month your rtc will be 1ft long and your peacok will proably be about 7'1/2inches it will get bettin up by your rtc.

You RTC will only fit in a 75 gallon for only a year and 6 months before it get's mad at will try to break the tank and everything in it.

the growth rate for Rtc is about 2-3inches and if you do decide to move you rtc when it get's too big Please, I impore you to use a long bucket so you don't mess up it's fins around it's spines. It is not a pretty sight to see your prize fish all tore up it is also a good idea so you once baby Rtc i now big, so it does not get a chance to thrash around and have injures It takes about 3months for injures to a catfish to heal.

my best bet is just go with a 120gallon(2ftWx 4ftLx 2ftH) instead as a starter. RTC's get about at least 1ft per year! 75g don't make up enough clean water for a REd tail catfish species, it dosen't even matter how good your filtration is. even if you have 3,000filtration system hook up to it on a 75gallon it is not enough clean water due to the rtc eating habbits. RTC cats starting out young will have a habit of trying to eat all fish that are even there own size! or biggeer!

-After 2year you will need a pond or tank that has 450g+++++and up.

-best food that redtail catfish likes are 7-8inch shiners if your rtc is about at least a foot long.

-it cost about a good $50-$65dollars a month for me to feed my Rtc alone. i do shop everwhere for lowest, cheapest price.

- it's been almost two years already and i put about around $2,500 for my Red tail catfish.
