regular wood into aquarium wood?

i've tried using tree branches and they just grow this white slimey stuff the only wood that has worked is driftwood

I use submerged branches from the the lake where i go fishing. there were fish swimming around it so i figured it would be safe and the water was looking nice and clear. I just put them in the bath in boiling water, scrubbed it, rinsed then let it sit in the hot water for about 20 mins. then its good to go. no tannins as it would have released them in to the lake some time ago and i didnt have the hassle of weighting it down like store bought drift wood.

Drift wood is regular wood until it get water logged so that is what you will to do. How long does that take depends on the wood.

My wife pulled out a small dead stump(roots attached) from our walk way. I dried it out,trimmed it, and cleaned it a little. Looks great in my tank..

any dry piece of hardwood with the bark removed will be fine as driftwood. Green wood and soft woods will rot

Also check your region, if there's spraying for bugs or other invasives in your area you don't want that in your tank either.
