If you are going to do a community with a lot of cover, like driftwood and bushes, a couple convicts running around going about their lives is very entertaining. Oscars will use every bit of space in the tank as well and interact with you (beg, follow hand). I've found Jack Dempseys to be pretty smart as well.
I like Electric Blue Jack Dempseys a lot, but my female hasn't grown past 3 inches in about a year, with weekly water changes and a good diet. My male has plumped up well. But the female would be vulnerable to fitting into the mouth of a bigger fish. EBJDs are hit and miss, genetically...if you are going to keep them you need to buy a group and hope a couple survive and if you see white poop it is over for them. Clean water and shelled peas soaked in garlic is your best hope with them IMO.
If you're interested in flowerhorns but think they're price prohibitive, they aren't much more expensive. I see young flowerhorns in the 10-25 dollar range pretty often. There are a couple LFS in my area that know me and I just call and ask if they have any nice new central American hybrids in, when I was collecting them. Now I'm moving more toward the mundane oscar/green terror/JD/convict setup in my 150...my flowerhorns and red texas cichlids are starting to be assertive so they're going into their own tank where they can be divided if needed and I can see what this fader does. But I've gotten Red Texas, Red Dragons, a cool Texas Red Devil, had an electric blue JD/red devil hybrid that was amazing, all bought at 1-2 inches for under $25. Just have to be picky and shop around....get to know your LFS owners....they need the money and will culture relationships with repeat customers.
