I don't understand where this money will be spent. A lot of cities have ponds that they don't do anything with, how much money does it take to maintain a pond? I would think none, seeing as they're naturally occuring.
Cities use their ponds for recreation, water supply, and more. They would likely have to spend money to get the ponds (many are privately owned) Also, almost every public pond in my area is a trash dump, so that takes money to get cleaned up. Most ponds that I have seen are man made, not naturally occuring. Often they are dug out and water is diverted to them from a creek or river, so you likely could not completely seal it off from other water ways. I would also think that people would get the wrong idea (" we can let our pacu go there, so it must be ok to release it anywhere")

On top of all this, most fish sold in the aquarium trade will die in the cooler climate of most states.

It wouldn't be a good idea because it would cost tax money to build and maintain it.
As opposed to all the other idiot programs that waste tax payer money, (cough) welfare (cough)? First it would create jobs and after the bailout why the hell not spend some green to keep a few icthologists(sp) employed. I like the idea. It isn't really going to encourage or discourage people getting what the shouldn't, if lack of suitable home habitat stopped people there would be almost no captive pacus, RTC, sharks, etc.

well i have a city pond ive see some 1.5' plecos ther and 4 months ago someone found a 3' gator was all over the news thers prolly some pacus in there it is a fishing pond too catfish, bass, trout maby some bluegill or sunfish

Is there a way to edit a post of yours? I meant to add that if they don't have the money to make something like that, then it's not like it's needed for a city, but I don't see why some cities with ponds laying around don't just designate that pond for safely releasing your fish.

Its just not that easy bro. Think about the sea birds that catch fish in their talons. Now, down here in Florida, I've seen osprey and eagles dive for fish only to drop them in mid fight somewhere down the road. And trust me, there are plenty more examples to learn from. On top of that, its just a stupid idea. Your talking about non-native species, so lets keep them non-native.

At first I didn't like the idea but if you had a company running it and would ask for a small charge to enter and use the pond it would work. The pond would have to be inside in order from keeping and birds or other animals out. Also all fish coming in would have to be checked for sickness. There would also have to be seperate ponds for seperate fish that need differnt ph and temp. Good idea though.

Great idea! Then they could buy a big lot where you could turn your dog loose after you tire of them..........Wrong........ It is called responsibility, if you buy something you should take care of it or dispose of it properly. Do not look for the government to take care of your pets after you are done with them.

i think the idea is a good concept, but really there is more maintnence in a pond then you think. what about keeping the water flowing and circulated? there is energy needed in it, maybe a nice fountain in the middle to keep the water oxidized. but still i do not know how you would get the word out that something like that exists. it is a good IDEA, but not practical. now maybe a nation wide program to find fish new homes when they outgrow it. thats about the only thing i can come up with.

Um sort of like local state run animal shelters? The government has a habit of supporting the indigent brood mares and the criminally stupid. Why not the abandoned pets including fish.
