hey there, getting close to getting a big canister, im looking at an FX5, rena XP3 or XP4. which do you think will get the job done and has the most bang for its buck over time?

setup is a 125g with an eheim 2217 and cascade 700, with (all juvies) an oscar, BP, 2 JDs, and 2 severums. so bio load will be moderate eventually. so i need an add on

all imput is appreciated :nilly:

All of them are good, but if you have filtration on it already then id go for the xp3 or xp4
But they are all around the same price where i am so id get the biggest but thats just me

I was just faced with a similar situation. I have a 125 with all juvie cichlids. I had an XP3 on it and needed more. I was not too happy with the Rena so I looked at some other options. For a while, I thought I would get the FX5 but then looked at the Fluval 405. Generally the 405 sells for $250, but I was able to pick it up at Petsmart on sale yesterday for $175. If u are lucky, you might be able to do the same. They have tons of filters on sale atm (the FX5 is not one of them). Since setting up yesterday, I am really happy. All in all, the quality of the Fluval 405 is tons better than that of the Rena's.

Hope this helps.

I have (2) xp3's in my 150 and a xp3 in my 55, still doing well, 7yrs plus, only drawback is the suction cups which don't last very long

fx5. never hurts to overfilter

If you are going to pay $200 for a filter grab the FX5. your topic thread is misleading, which is best for the buck, the FX5. but since you already have filters with your 125, hence people will tell you, that you don't need more than a FX5. run an FX5 and a sump and pump and you will be good. FX5 can be bought online for $200. I've had Xp3, JUNK! I've heard good things about XP4, but never want to experience it. $175 for a 405, I would have added a few more $$$ to grab the FX5. but that is just me. I will soon start selling all my smaller filters and moving up to all FX5s, even on my 75 gallon I would want to run FX5.

I love my rena but what do I know? I think the renas are more user friendly--I'd get the xp4. And it's silent as ever.
