repair dream tank or build new?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the cost of 1 piece of glass is more that the silicone it would take to repair that tank. That 500 is a beautiful custom built art piece, and you're right, you'll never see one like it again, because there isn't another one like it.

The trim looks fine, unless its broken, it looks to me like some time sanding and refinishing would make it shine.

cut it apart and rebuild it on the stand. Its easier than you think, the worst part is getting started.

The 500 is cheaper, quicker, and easier. The plywood tank would be more expensive, more time, and just as nerve wracking. Honestly, whats the difference between 380 gallons of water on the basement floor and 500?

well the 500 has 1 small peice of trim left around the bottom so i have to do all that and the paints chipping on the back. also peices of the plastic that hold the top up are missing and the top is lol. the lighting will be more expensive plus the filtration and i have to buy a new heater. theres a few little unimportant things. and the 380 i can test if water holds outside since it can fit through the door but the 500 has to be put together on the stand were it will stay

Take the 500
clean it
make it look good
put in place
fill slowly make it days instead of a day
also maybe build a plywood drip tray around the tank. maybe a step up in th eroom that caould fill with any spill.

i like the 500...

Id do it cool shape to it too!

What a strange looking tank...What I don't get is why would they build a tank with that odd cut out in the back middle?

I have to agree with every single poster so far... fix the 500. Bigger tank, cheaper, and can be used as practice for the plywood build you are planning. If you won't fix it then I would be glad to take it off your hands. Heck I'd even trade you one of my old dirt bikes just so u got your trade back lol... best of luck with whichever you choose

in all my tanks the trim is just there for decoration and to hold the lid. silicone bonds very well to glass to therefore it holds it all together. like someone else said the difference between a 500g failure and a 380g failure is very small. and also fill it slowly once you have it all together. watch it and you will be fine. lighting will come as you can afford it this is a kickass tank so I would not pass on it.

I will second the cut apart and reassemble in place. Work slow and take your time. You will never find another tank like that again. When you move just disassemble, move, reassemble.

Be sure to number the panes and draw a sketch to make it easier.
