Gel foods are no different than pellets, in so much as if one feeds too large of a portion size, or too many portions at once, there will be excessive chewing and excessive waste expelled via the gills.
Thanks for the review fishman. I tried a sample of the soilent green when I was raising my flagtail and was happy with the results. He would eat pellets off the water surface but it was nice to have something in there that he could graze on during the day. I tried the algae wafers on him but he was not interested in the large sized, hard wafers. He loved the gel and it was nice to see a more natural feeding from him. Thanks again for the review, Im sure it helped answer questions many may have had on the use of the product.
I think that the Repashy food has more applicability for small fish / fry than for larger ones. Might as well feed quality pellets to big fish.
That said, I've tried Soilent Green and Meat Lovers...and my fish (of all sizes) ate it (little ones bit by bit and big ones in a gulp).
A couple of fun uses for it:
- As a vacation food. I travel on business, usually for 2-3 days at a time. A little chunk of this stuff in a fry or grow out tank gives piece of mind for keeping little ones fed.
- Molding it into rocks or other rough surfaces for mbuna and other rock or substrate grazing fish. More like natural behavior than eating a pellet.
The PITA of making the stuff (it stinks), storing it in the fridge (my wife complains about fish stuff in the fridge) and my general happiness with quality pellets and flakes makes me less likely to use this stuff as a staple and more as an occasional concoction.
As an aside, I culture red wiggler worms (it's super easy)...and feed them usually 1-2 times per week to most fish...no frozen or live food buying for me
Thanks dogofwar for the review. I agree that this is best used on small fish and fry and that its not a staple food for sure. I only supplement this stuff with my larger guys once or twice a week that eat it. It does stink for sure but i guess im lucky cause my girlfiend doesnt seem to be bothered by me cooking or storing it. I much rather prefer mixing this stuff vs crushing up pellets for fry and making a mess in the water. very clean way to feed fry and what they dont eat siphons up easily as its localized to one spot.
Matt - for vacation food try dropping a couple of wafers in your tank, IME it lasts a LOT longer than gel food as the fry have to work a bit harder for the first 24 hrs to feed off of them, at least the wafers that I use.
Forrest - you may not be aware of this, but there are "pellets" that come in small micron size, as small as dust particles, no need to crush anything and small enough for even the smallest of fry. You may still prefer to feed gel, just thought that you might want to know that there are small pellets designed specifically for fry available (more than one brand) that don't require any type of crushing.
What ive been doing for my fry is I feed the gel to any fry im pulling till they can accept .5 mm nls and im really liking it. I like the low maintenence feeding of the gel and like I said im seeing improvements in some fish and my fry are growing very well and are super healthy. If it aint broke...

I grind NLS in a coffee grinder for my fry and that works great too but both other options seem just fine as well. Different strokes for different folks!
