scat,do you think raising or lowering the temperature will entice yours to spawn?

I'm hoping that by raising the temp I'm simulating the hot dry season when fish do not spawn. I've reduced feeding and have restricted large scale water changes.

Here in a couple of months I plan on bombarding the fish with live food again and I'll start making large scale water changes with RO water that is several degrees cooler than what they are used to. In this way I hope to signal the fish to breed by simulating the start of breeding season when food is plentiful and water paramters change drastically due to heavy rains.

Agreed.

I believe raining season in SA is around June or July ( it's actually the coldest season of the year ) Right after the first rain, temp starts to raise gradually and most of fish will spawn. By the end of July and August when temp is much warmer, food become abundant... small fish, insect.. etc.

Actually I will take my words back. Raining season in different area varies. You have check individually....

It's great to see that besides the pictures and the muscle flexing  ...there's a lot of information here. Where's DM by the way, life caught up to him or something?

On another note, through this "stupid fish hobby of yours" (quoting my wife) I've made some really good friendships :headbang2, who knew, eh?!?

i feel ya so much time money and effort goin into the hobby its almost like school with all the knowledge and friendships that you come out of it

anyway goin back on topic..i think that the water conditions and the different organisms may take a part in size...my theory is that the organisms from the different plants around the area can affect the cichla immune system slowing down growth rate and also current and structures in the water...to catch their prey in fast moving waters i would think they would need a compact sleek body to move through the water faster..adaptation to the surrounding environment

Definitely, one thing that came to mind was dried almond leaves that I used for my Geo setups. The tanic acids that are released from them not only soften the water, but they have serious anti-fungal properties as well, an all around medicinal plant for ones setup.

I know it sounds "pompous" when one mentions the word "biotope", but to be honest, if one gets wild caughts, I would dare presume that the best results will be obtained by mimicking at its best their natural habitat.

a totally different type of fish but with my experience with breeding and keeping fancy bettas ive noticed that ive gotten better results from my "tea" water where i would have almond leaves sit in aged water that ive boiled
the spawn was both larger (in number) and grew faster and with better colors
