why not leave them on 24/7? my infra reds that i buy at menards or home depot last 6+ months

When I had reptiles the same thing happened to me, then I started buying cheap solid red bulb from Liqidaters (crapy dept. store) and I saved alot of $.

Every nite time blue or red bulb I buy burns out within its 3rd or 4th use:irked::irked::irked::irked::irked::irked::irked::irked::irked::irked::irked::irked::irked::irked::irked::irked::irked::irked::irked:
What are you trying to heat? I dont like blue or red bulbs for nigth time heating , they spend way to much energy, they keep my animals awake and stressed and has you findout they burn very quikly:grinno: Why insted dont you use a ceramic lamp insted? They give no ligth so your animals will be able to sleep well, they give a nice warm amouth of heat and you can use them on a termostat so that you can select the exact temp you want:D This lamps also have a much longer longevity. Red or blue bulbs are much bether for day time heat:)

And honestly, unless your house gets below like, 65'F at night....you really don't need ANY nighttime bulb. I never use one.
Same here:D But when you have warm loving species say green igs its good to have one even if its unused most of the year;)

most reptiles thrive and eat at night and the lights simulate natural behavior as well as make viewing possible.

Not if you are a day time animal:DTry sleeping at nigth with a 100w bulb pointing at your head. No heat or a no ligth bulb or heating device its the way to go;)Of course if you have say a tokay gecko and you want to see him eating, going on its normal nigth time bussines, etc your gonna need a special ligth that allows you to see him without him seeing you, say one of thouse moon ligths. I used to have a big female of this critter and I used a ceramic lamp on her terrarium:D and only used a red lamp when I wanted to sheck on her. This lamp when used whit a termostat is really cost eficient when it comes to electricity consunpsion;)

i have a red bulb for my leos and it comes on during the night so i can watch them at night. but i need it for heat since there in the basement and my dad has to run the ac 24/7 lol
