rescue ink giving you piranha fans a bad name

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just watched that clip and couldnt believe that this was actually produced by National Geographic. I cant believe that those guys were so scared of a these little piranhas, the one guy had no clue what he was talking about.... Pathetic............ Thats all I can say about that.

I'm lost as to the reaction. They were trying to convince some one who clearly shouldn't have had the fish to surrender them without a fight. So they blew some smoke up his ass to get him to do it. They didn't put the fish down they just moved them to a proper facility to be cared for. The alternative would be the state seizing them, we all know how that would have ended. The message any one who isn't an idiot would be don't get a pet you can't take care of or one that's illegal.

They were more cautious than I would have been in the situation. Also I'd say that a piranha can certainly inflict a painful bite if it thinks your finger is food or frightened. One child getting hurt by an exotic pet in the current political environment would be a nightmare to our hobby.

National Geographic provides a wide variety of views (pro/con). The reason NY has them illegal is because of idiot hobbyists that turn them loose in rivers, ponds etc. Having said that, of course they over exaggerated the danger. In my over 45 years of keeping piranhas there was never an incident where my children/grandchildren ever put their hands in the tank. They were properly educated on the care of these fishes. Watching that little girl tapping on the glass sent alarm bells to me. This parent had not been teaching that child anything about aquariums and probably even less about piranhas. So those fish should have been removed from that home. These are the kind of people that give piranha hobbyists a bad name.

As for the zoo, in the large aquarium they put those 3 or 4 inch fish in, will take longer than 2 months to get them to a proper size. That was probably just talking without thinking.

As for those bruisers taking the fish, I'm not impressed. Just look like hoodlums coming into a private residence to initimidate. I would have kept their butts outside and only allowed the wildlife authority in my home. I certainly would have made it very uncomfortable for them to just walk in.

Aggreed, I got fish with razorsharp teeth, but my 2 year old knows very well that putting her hands in the water will hurt.
Or she'll learn the hard way pretty quickly!
But she's got 2 hands anyways....:screwy:
I'm just glad the lil'girl in the vid survived those nasty fish!!!:D

I think this is a good point though that clip was a bit absurd. didn't national geo also produce the show about these fish that debunked their "vicious" reputation?

I certainly would have made it very uncomfortable for them to just walk in.
I'm also presuming you wouldn't keep fish that were illegal. All the owner had to do was refuse to let them in and they would have stopped. However then he would have gotten nailed for $100-$250 per fish (Ma can be up to $1000), he could have been expelled from housing if it's section 8, and the fish would have been put down.

So those fish should have been removed from that home. These are the kind of people that give piranha hobbyists a bad name.
So how is blowing a little smoke up his ass to do it bad, as opposed to bringing the whole weight of NYC justice system down on him, and killing the fish.

The end of the clip showed piranha kept properly, in fact in what would be a luxurious tank.

Definitely over-dramatized, but that was too many fish for that tank anyway.

Did any one notice how when they said "these piranas can get to 20 inches long" they showed a black?

It's all about one bad apple spoiling the bunch.
The majority of non informed people that keep these fish DO expose them to things to make them retain their "coolness".
Thus, that information gets out to "responsible" people, and those "responsible" people see these actions and condemn the fish.

Same thing (sorta, don't trip ladies) as guns and Pit Bulls.
Give them to toolbags and bad things happen, give them to the right folks and you have a 2500$+ well trained guard dog.Staffies from name worthy kennels this is no problem.

Second part, you could have an ***, Or a responsible gun owner.
