It's all about one bad apple spoiling the bunch.
The majority of non informed people that keep these fish DO expose them to things to make them retain their "coolness".
Thus, that information gets out to "responsible" people, and those "responsible" people see these actions and condemn the fish.

Same thing (sorta, don't trip ladies) as guns and Pit Bulls.
Give them to toolbags and bad things happen, give them to the right folks and you have a 2500$+ well trained guard dog.Staffies from name worthy kennels this is no problem.

Second part, you could have an ***, Or a responsible gun owner.

absolutely. funny thing about staffies is that here there on lists of dangerous/aggressive dogs. In the UK they call them "nanny" dogs because they're so good with children.

I'm lost as to the reaction. They were trying to convince some one who clearly shouldn't have had the fish to surrender them without a fight. So they blew some smoke up his ass to get him to do it. They didn't put the fish down they just moved them to a proper facility to be cared for. The alternative would be the state seizing them, we all know how that would have ended. The message any one who isn't an idiot would be don't get a pet you can't take care of or one that's illegal.

They were more cautious than I would have been in the situation. Also I'd say that a piranha can certainly inflict a painful bite if it thinks your finger is food or frightened. One child getting hurt by an exotic pet in the current political environment would be a nightmare to our hobby.

Yeah, the reactions are comical. Just men doin their job. You guys ever see the disclaimer that the views on the show are not a representation of the network? Why should National Geographics be any different.

"they may look like goldfish but their razor like teeth can cut right to the bone" haha!!!

I think this is a good point though that clip was a bit absurd. didn't national geo also produce the show about these fish that debunked their "vicious" reputation?

yup, River Monsters with Jeremy Wade (great show, btw). Heres a clip of him putting blood into the water and getting into a pool of piranhas...

"Mike has a report of piranhas in an apartment.......with kids!!!!....

Geez I hate the way they present the idea "Piranhas in an apartament... WITH KIDS!!!!...:nilly: as if the kids somehow were in mortal danger due to r the sole piranha presence!!!!.

It is for sure more danger for kids in any of our kitchens than in our piranha tanks.....:ROFL:

I didn't like the way they send a handfull of big mean looking guys to intimidate the owner and make him give his piranhas away.....:irked:

On the other hand the piranha were kept in not good conditions, I mean there where too many piranha in a little tank so I guess the best move was to take the piranhas to a better place as they did.

Cheers.

It's incredible how they can put a bad reputation on this inteligent beautiful and interesting fish...
You must have one to understand their behaviour!

Somebody told me about this today, this kind of media pisses me off, as it contributes to anti-P laws. This episode was in NY, where you need a permit for P's.

i completly agree with some of your post piranhas are kept in gawdaful conditions that make them aggresive jsut like those horrible movies.....

the rest of it i completly disagree with
theres a reason pit bulls are considered aggressive..... any dog bred to kill other dogs is going to do so(and its rather sad cause its not the dogs fault they werent even originaly bred for that) but sadly you cant get rid of something so firmly ingrained in there brain

while how there raised plays a part in it im a beliver that nature plays a bigger role than nuturing

Did any one notice how when they said "these piranas can get to 20 inches long" they showed a black?

I definitely noticed that. They could have kept their facts straight and still ended up with the same result.

Deff. staged...So the owner of the piranhas could have actually said no to the Rescue Ink taking them?

Poor job National Geo! :headshake
