rescued another turtle!!! Can i put it with my other one?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have two baby painted that I keep in one of those bins that you can put under your (got at walmart). The bin isn't under my bed though :grinno:. It's on a stand I made out of an old TV cabnet.:D But they may end up in a kiddie pool later on. I also have an adult male that I keep in my pond outside.

I don't think he'll return it, seeing as he didn't with the advice about the snapper. If your going to keep it get a seperate tank mate :)
Oh btw - A snapper and a soft shell turtle has to be THE worst match I'v ever heard of. Hint. Snapper + Soft shell

Unfortunately, snappers not usually protected in the States -- so he could do whatever he want. However Painted Turtles are protected in some states. I am not sure if his state is one of them, which I am warning him about.

Just because someone does a setup a certain way, it doesn't make it right. I have seen people put their big boas in enclosures that is only 10% or 20% of their total length. Does it make it make it right? No.

Anyway, go find a wildlife-filled pond away from the infrastructures and place him there. I am not sure about your state, since Painted Turtles are protected in lot of the states and provinces.

what does that mean...? So that makes it ok to take an animal out of the wild and put it in a 10 gallon tank? Whay don't you just tell him its the wrong thing to do instead of making up a story of what he could do. It's wrong so tell him.

I was referring to his science teacher who kept all those turtles together. Just because you can, it doesn't means you should. So the message I was conveying is that just because someone kept them together, it doesn't means it is right to copy them.

This would be pretty useless anyway. Quite a few told him to put the snapper back, and that it was wrong for him to take it from the wild. but he didn't listen. It would be exactly the same case for the painted, so instead of us wasting breath telling him whats right and wrong (he knows its wrong to a degree anyway) we have to do the next best thing :)

WC'S are always a victim of opinion, sadly.

Try to keep that painted outside if you can. Baby paints are a little trickier than RES. Give him a varied diet, make sure he gets plenty of sun, and I wouldn't keep him with the snapper. As hatchlings they'll probably be OK for a bit but eventually the snapper is going to have a go at your paint, resulting in a bitten off tail or leg, or a dead painted.

CTUFAN what makes painteds a little different from RES, just out of curiousity lol?

the best option is the one above me. snapping turtle will own it.
common man. look at how animals live in the wild....
plus my friend had a snapper in a 20 g. that had NO room.
in a year u would have no water in ur awaurium, just 2 turtles.

Just stick him in a kiddie pool. Use a cinderblock as a basking area and put it outside. Works, and cost less than even a 20 gallon tank. (you can get 127 gal kidde pools for $10.

that sounds good. i will have to get some pics up later of the painted turtle. it looks great. I can get up a 45 gallon tank for the turts.will that work Until i can get a pool up? I love this painted turtle. It is amazing how colorful they are. it has a bright yellow striped face. it trys to walk when i hold it by the shell. lol! look at it this way. It was roadkill for sure, but now it is alive:D

No.
Like everybody has said, you need to keep them apart, because sooner or later (whatever size of tank) your painted is going to get injured/killed. Please listen to us mate :(
At least get some sort of tank/enclosure for your painted, then get the pond sorted for your snapper. The painted then can go in the 10 gallon, and you can begin sorting out a larger tank for it. I would definately stop with the 'rescues' if you can't do this for your turtles. Release the animals you end up finding elsewhere :)
