I bought a tank from Craigslist that needed resealed. I have removed the old silicone and I'm working on cleaning up the corners. I have a question though. I am using a razor blade to clean the corners, but there seems to be stuff still there. I believe this "stuff" is possibly hard water deposits that just don't want to come up. The silicone on this tank was bad and on several of the seems it looked to only be sticking well in the very corner for about 1/8". I haven't used acetone yet. Do you think that cleaning with a razor blade and acetone is enough, even if some of these slight deposits are still there?

You really need to get it clean very good.new wont stick to old. Keep on putting your elbow into it and keep replacing the blades you are using. Do NOT remove that silicone in the glass panes if possible.You break that bond and you may as well disassemble it all.I personally use alcohol.Then just seal it up and smooth it out. If you can for best results take that blue painters tape and actually measure it out as you lay the tape down the seems. I use cd cases and as I put the tape on I just keep the tape right up to the edges of the cd cases.Once all the tape is on that one seam I just move all the cd cases to the next seam.It gives you a perfect line all even on all corners. I am sure theres something longer than all the cd cases you could use but its what I did recently.Then seal it up with the gun and smooth it.DONT wait too long-peel that tape right off and you will have perfect seams. If you wait too long to peel it you will break the seals. You definitely dont want that. In any case, I just resealed a 100 gallon not too long ago(december) and people cant believe I did it. Now they all ask me to fix their old tanks.Its been up and running fine-filled and no leaks since then.(6' in the air LOL) Good luck. PM me if you need anymore help. I believe the silicone is gone. In the pictures you can see what I'm talking about. The hazing looking places are the places that the silicone was pulled away on that water was getting behind. And the area around the hazy places are where the silicone was still attached good.
Hi im looking to reseal mine 112 g - 6ftx20''18'' tank. i wouldn't take it apart just reseal it as it is.I wonder how many tubes do i need? I read somewhere on internet i can use some 100% non toxic silicon (cheaper) instead of proper aqua safe one what do you think guys? thanks

That actually looks like a thin skin of silicone still remains. Try a new razor blade held at a 45 degree angle and I bet it will come off.
