RESEARCH PEOPLE!!! PLEASE..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm lucky enough to have an awesome lfs nearby that wont sell you a fish just because you want it. If they know you're going to put a fish that gets 12" in to a 20g tank then they will refuse to sell it, even if they are losing a $300 sale from a single tang.

I agree totally with you and I know we've not always seen eye to eye in the past but I'll explain below.

It's safe to say that almost all in the hobby have started out seen a fish at an LFS and been given bad advise. Good post.

I think this is a great site the promotes the great issue of fish welfare in captivity, the problem is where do you draw the line.

LFS are out to make money lets not kid ourselves here, it's a business and if the 'little cute fish' makes them X% profit then 9-10 times they are going to take it.

I've experienced both sides in one conversation that outlines this:

I recently bought a new giant gourami, and was asked on purchase 'what is the size of your tank', followed by 'I'm sorry I had to ask but some people don't understand the size they get'. Minutes later in the conversation we asked for some smaller fish for other tanks and he joked 'how about a TSN?' to which he went on to 'they are really good sellers at small size', so I returned with 'I wonder where they all go when they get too big' and was told 'I've often wondered that too'.

Both sides in one story, there is fish welfare there but at the end of the line is a profit.

Education is the key and this is something that this site is great at, post a redtail cat in a 55 and get shot down in flames, and rightly so, but on the other hand the store that is selling them is also to blame for this. I've seen the hugest tank with the most common missold monsters in it and a public aquarium near myself and used to have a giga in there and it out grew that tank, a tank that is fully stocked with fully grown pacu, redtail cats etc. all that can be bought at a local LFS. I can count on one hand the number of tanks on here that can fully cope with fish of this size, yet every day I see threads like 'my new pacu' or 'RTC growing club' and it is sad to see.

Every time I walk into an LFS and see a RTC for sale I think 'what are you doing' on the other hand there might be a buyer looking for one with a tank that CAN house such a beast and think 'if it was me I'd want it for sale'.

It's a double edge sword.

Who can honestly say that they provide a perfect environment for there fish that totally mimics the wild, neon tetra keepers?, guppy hordes?. I can't, I just do the best for the fish I have. Monster or not.

Before I get shot down in flames, I'm always looking to upgrade everything when the is right.

Happy fish keeping everyone.
There's many ppl on this forum , when going through threads if i see you have posted i stop to look even if the subject doesnt interest me. I respect your opinions/comments. You are one of a very few ppl who have my respect. Thanks for posting..:D

i think he means that u need to put this in a shop so people can see it BEFORE they buy.
Yes, I meant that if people are here doing research, they are several steps ahead of someone in a store doing an impulse buy. BTW, fish stores thrive off of those people. They are the ones who kill fish and come back to buy more. The idea of someone buying a fish and keeping it alive for 20 years disgusts brick and mortar store owners. They are the ones that keep the store there for you to head into and get deals, find steals, or just shoot the *poo* with someone about fish.

But I digress.... I meant you should tell this to people before they make it into the store... as in on the corner in front of the store. Poor joke, no offense meant.

I've just been thinking and come to the conclusion that a lot of these problems could be solved IF an LFS just didn't stock fish that would get too large UNLESS it was special order...

I mean lets be honest, there are a lot of small fish that are worth quite a bit of cash, and its not always tank busters that bring in money... there is one LFS that i frequent who will only stock small fish for this exact reason... and if asked will try and locate any fish you ask for given that he knows you have the tank to house said fish properly, although its not always possible for him to get, but he does try...

So all in all i think Yanbbrox was right saying it is a double edge sword, since any store needs regular customers to help keep them afloat, and if all fish keepers managed to keep their fish alive for years on end, a lot of these shops would end up closing down...

This whole thread is an Excellent thing! I'll be honest working in an LFS sucks at times but is an awesome things at times....When I started out I said yeah a Pacu will fit in a 55gal:ROFL:I now feel bad at the people I said that to....I always tell people to do research...Some dont listen to it though. Had a guy that came up with a 3 Pangasius, I recommend he google it. He did and well they still got the fish:nilly:....To the post above Really people that keep killing fish and return them (if it's in a guarentee which good LFS will have Good Guarentees) loose money....So in the long run getting someone addicted to the hobby along with "Fixing" the people with misinformation can keep an LFS afloat...This is really good LFS though....

One time I was at the LSF and this girl was looking at oscars and she asked the guy if she could put two in her 30 gallon. The guy said yes. I look at him and said no way can you. I told the girl they get to 14" and she didn't buy them. I think they guy was mad at me but who cares, he just wanted a sale, really got me mad.
