Resist Impulse Buying!!

I think your best bet is to research large amounts of different fish if you might potentially get any new fish.
That way if a good deal on some rare fish comes up, you can make the impulse buy because you'd already be familiar with the basic care any fish they might get.

Also it might help because when I used to get fish many were not indenfied properly so it was basically the same as an impulse buy.

When I bought my synos who were intended to live in my 55 gal, I thought I was getting a smaller species. So before I bought them, I never researched syno. eupterus because I didn't know that's what they were.

Well actually I forgot to post but I went back the next day and they had 3 of 4 still there.. they were not Payara's though, they were glass headstanders (Charax Gibbosus) which to me looked similar just going from memory.. I went ahead and picked them up. They get 6" max length and they love their meat, won't take pellets or flakes or anything else..

They are still a really cool fish though, have them in a 29 with a striped raphael..

Depending on the relative size a rapheal might try to eat one some night, barring that, great fish.
They happily take small earthworms, black and tubifex worms, often mosquito larvae, and tiny live crickets. Using crickets you can often get them to start also taking floating pellets of small size, just add afew among the floating, kicking crickets to start, and slowly increase the porportions of pellets vs crickets.

Sounds good, I'll give it a shot. The Raphael is under 3" so no worries there. The head standers have grown about 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch so far.
