I'm sure this has happened to probably every user at this site... but I had another one of those wonderful LFS experiences today that I thought I'd share anyway.
I was down the street at this old LFS that I rarely go to due to the quality of their "care".
The owner had some 3" Pacus in a 20 gallon tank with 1-2 bitten up Silver dollars. He had them labeled as Piranhas and the length only getting to 12". Obviously they weren't the real thing and it kind of ticked me off so I confronted the manager about it.
I asked the guy about the fish and he told me they were "None-Aggressive" Piranha. I then asked him if he knew they were illegal to sell in Florida where he then switched to calling them Pacus. I then asked him if he knew that Pacus could grow to 36" rather than 12" and then he gave me that whole "Fish only grow to tank size" bit.
He ended it with telling me that inspectors had come in and said it was fine but I highly doubt that.
I'm sorry, but it really pisses me off when store owners try to pass off fish like that. They have no idea what they're getting their customers into and in the end they're basically pocketing money off of the ignorant public.
I couldn't really say much else to sway him since I don't think he really knew what he was doing in the first place so I ended up just taking the Red Belly Piranha information tag and left.
