I have a FX5 with 3 layers of the ceramic ring things I forgot the name of em and I clean it out once a month, just cleaned it last Sunday. I feed them twice a day and my water is cripsy clear. Other two rays are still very active breathing just fine, sldfjdslkfj.
My guess would be you killed off some BB cleaning your filter. I would try not to disturb the ceramic rings and just change or clean out the sponges.
I HIGHLY recommend to any fish keeper to have more than 1 filter so that you can more safely clean them by rotating back and forth.
Even if you just threw an AC 110 on the back it would give you some cushion for when you clean the fx5

Rays can be finicky, and from my understanding retics are one of the more sensitive species
Sucks that you lost her, I would just test your water often until you figure out for sure why it is spiking but I am pretty sure your filter cleaning did it.
Did you use tap water or tank water to clean the filter?
Ray keeping can humble some pretty experienced fish keepers, everything is magnified ten fold with the amount of waste and food that come along with rays.
