I just don't get why my motoros are fine though.

Rays can be finicky, and from my understanding retics are one of the more sensitive species
^^^ This. Motoros are much hardier, especially once they are established. I believe it was the ammonia also. Be careful not to clean all the bb off the ceramic rings as this can cause an ammonia spike. I learned this the hard way also.

Well,

This is your problem: you have one filter and you clean it too often. You cleaned your filter and you killed most of good bacteria, that why your Ammonia is not 0.
If you must clean filter clean only sponge, and use only cold water. I clean my Eheim 2080 once every 3-4 months, even 6 months. If the flow is OK you don't need to clean your filter.
I recommended to have 2 filters. When you clean one filter second you do not touch. Then after 1-2 months you can clean the second one, but only if you really need, when the flow is bad. Never two filters at once.

Motoro is much, much stronger stingrays than Retric. Retric are really delicate and they need really good water. I have exactly the same problem like you had. My retric do not eat, and ammonia is 0.5ppm... because after cleaning my tank, I forgot to turn on my second bio filter... and now I need to change water everyday, using Prime and testing water often. I will do it probably for the next couple days, when my bio filter will be ready.

Good luck !

I would recommend using tank water instead of cold tap water.

thank you everybody. I guess I do over clean my filter media. I knew it wasn't too bad I really only wanted to clean out the sand that got sucked up for a better flow, after a month my intake hose is covered in sand and a good amount of sand is at the bottom of the canister.

this was the retic that was chasing around the motoros when I first introduced them. after a month or so divided, took it out, she chased them, back up. couple weeks later I tried again, she chased them. tried one last time, nothing. they were fine together for the last couple of weeks. just wanted to sell her because my motoros are starting to hit a growth spurt wanted more room. the retic was very active, probably her most active this last week having the whole tank agian, swimming midline, up and down the walls, swimming in the FX5 output current.

Just a hard lesson learned I guess. Cleaned my FX5 the day after xmas I won't touch it again until end of Feb/March now I guess.

I clean mine every half year, i have 2x fx5, and take one at the time, and wayt 3-4 weeks before i take the other(just in case the first hasnt gotten all the good bacteria back).

now I notice my one motoro not eating as much as he usually does. takes a couple night crawlers than buries himself again while the other male eats the rest.

owning rays is so stressful haha

Your're right ;)

If you have good water is the best way... If you have other tank - even better is using water from them.

and not cold, cold... - luke warm water... sorry...

GL :)

my motoros, especially one, are less active and eating less now.
ammonia is down to 0 now and they are breathing normal, what do you think?
