i have used lava rock in the sump on my ray tank and no of many other people who have done the same thing.... after awhile it can help remove nitrate

lava rock is okay for FW tanks.. saltwater tank it breaks it down and releases iron.
A pond expert lady told me otherwise though, she said in the long-term, using lava rock for large bio-filters will leech unwanted minerals and unless large frequent water changes are being performed (not so much in ponds) those bad minerals will build up and eventually effect the gill function of fish.
