Reticulated Stingray Breeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Generally if a male is sexually mature, the clasper are easily visable as they will protrude well beyond the disc margin.

It may help to note that females tend to grow faster and larger than males IME.

Sand does stick to rays sometimes, but usually is a problem associated with new sand, and it goes away with time.

Yes quite often young retics are spooked by just about anything. Even a new food can send them dashing with only a touch. This probably one of the reasons I like to have a sand substrate, it allows them a place to feel safe.
Males also seem to be more prone to the spooking, as they are generally more cautious.

What size was your ray when you purchased it? And how long have you had it?

AJ :)

hey thanks for all the info. I got my ray at about 3.5 inches (its disc). It was labeled as a teacup stingray but after doing reasearch I found out it was a reticulated ray and that there common name is the teacup ray.

Glad to help.

At that size I would guess your ray was 1-3 months old when you got it.
So I would anticipate another year or so before your ray is sexually mature.

Research is very important with stingrays, good move!

especially with these little bastards, believe it or not, if you can keep these rays for a long time you've accomplished much more than the average aquarist!! AJ bred retics and that's like getting a doctorates degree in stingray keeping!!

LOL Funny thing, I learned so much from sites like this one over the years.
It's good to give some back.

And Retics (magdalenae) are probably one of the most abused rays, usually due to simple misinformation.

Thanks for the props guys!

How are retics abused? Also what is the information that alot of people miss about them? Is it that they need almost perfect water comditions or some thing? Thanks for all your help.

i also own a pair of retics about the same size as this fellows and would like to know the same thing. i've had no prblems keeping my retics and getting them to grow out mine are 5"m and 5.5"f that were both 4" and under when i got them about 2 months ago

Most idiots keep them in tiny tanks, with bad tank mates and water quality. This is mainly due to the fact that they are so cheap and are usually sold at a very small size. I personally prefer retics to motoros, not mine though:D
