LOOKIN GOOD..... NICE AND FAT

JUST KEEP THE WATER NICE AND CLEAN AND THEY WILL START TO GROW....

They look great Miles!!! did you ever end up treating the tank?

THey look a lot better :)

In the last pict they look a little skinny but look pretty healthy!!!

WHat are you feeding them?

by the way where did you get those retics. I have been looking for some. TFD has some cheap but just wondering if you have a better source.

Feeding blackworms.. Mixing in minor amounts of HBH SuperSoft and Jungle Anti-Parasite.. They seem to be eating some of the pellets.

The one with the snubbed tail (hardly pictured) still has a minor dent in it's head and shows it's hips if it is not full.. It's only not full in the morning when I wake up.. but eats vigirously.. It came in a bit skinny. But in the last few days with the pellets it seems to be putting on weight.

I got them through a LFS on a trade, she got them from Cichlid Exchange in Portland, OR..

Just some more FYI..

The LFS originally had the 1 male retic on a central system.. Luckily she is very knowledgable and brought in an expert in parasite control for Koi.. They took a sample of the male retic's poop, and looked at it under a microscope. Apparantly it had Columnarus (sp?)..

It was treated for a week or so, and he really bounced back.. chowing blackworms and wigglers. I asked her to get 3-4 more for me on a trade for some community fish and dwarf cichlids.

Week later, 3 females arrived. :) One was very tiny, and I declined it.. I took the other nicest 2.. They were QT'ed on her system for another week, making sure they were eating well.. But the dosage of anti-parasite meds was miniscule.

That is why I am paranoid about the parasites, and I think I will still do a PraziPro bath. I am assuming if the other ray had parasites, and came from the same wholesaler (which was suppose to QT for parasites), so all the females likely have them too..

Doing %30 W/C's, once or twice a day, syphoning for poop.. Using prime as a dechlor. 180g acrylic with overflow, 50g sump full of sponge media w/ air donuts underneath for flow, 900gph return. RenaXp3, stacked with biomedia for immediate breakdown in the tank.

AJ, I chose retics because they are a bit more reasonable for max size and I would like to see healthy captive bred's be more commonly available for beginner stingray keeper, rather than the larger Motoros.. I am thinking I need another male and 2-3 more females.. But I am also interested in hystrix and scobina.. Pricing is :( though.

Thanks for reading :P

Sounds like you are going all out. :)

I wouldn't think you will need all that space unless you have more rays coming in soon.

Unless you have other things effecting your water quality, you could quite possibly go a month with out a waterchange, due to the sheer volume.

But of course the more waterchanges the merrier!

Hystrix are really a great ray for beginners, It's a shame they are not as readily available as before, and few if any are breeding them yet.

Mature female retics do still attain substantial sizes in time.
Our females are around 30" total length, give or take.

AJ :)

I just wanted to work with a larger volume of water, so more margin for error.. I assume alot of the issues with 'teacup' rays is from undersized tanks and ammonia spikes.. My pH is fairly high here, and the minimum amounts of ammonia are very lethal because of this..

I chose to have no tankmates for the meantime, as I want to be absolutely zero variables of stress.. When they start eating prepared food and become larger in size, I was thinking of trying Severums, Snooks, and BGK.

Those females do get big! My other tank is 96x30x30, so it should be a good mama tank... Crazy to think my 375g is 'just big enough' for one of the smaller species of FW ray.. Another practical reason to choose retics.. Atleast I have room to work with.

Can you explain megdelanae to me? I am confused..
