The goal of any flowerhorn owner is to get the max of its fish potential, which means color and Kok. Thats what being a flowerhorn owner is all about. This is why they buy particular foods for that purpose... Ching mix...Red Sumo.. Humpy head etc.

I was just responding to a previous remark about increasing Kok size.

I agree.

I chose the food I did because I knew it would promote better health, color and kok. But it is not what I would call a target food, it's not formulated specifically for kok growth. It's formulated for all around growth etc. The kok is what it will be. If the food is of good quality ( and water parameters maintained) the kok will grow to it's full genetic potential. I still say if your focused so much on the kok growth it's too easy to miss when your fish becomes a fat a**.

I went back and read the thread again and I am sorry for coming on so strong....you weren't exactly saying what I thought you were.

"Pumping up" a flowerhorn sounds wayyy too much like "power feeding" a reptile. A practice that leads to guess what? Obesity, poor health, some times an early death.

I agree with you on the "pump it up" situation. I hear it used a lot on the flowerhorn forums. Every time someone post a new fish everybody assumes it's malnourished and can be kept in a better situation so they say "pump it up" meaning feed it right and keep it in good conditions so you can post it up at a later time and show us it's full potential.

Thats exactly it...and I'll look at the fish in question and it's practically bulging because it's so beefy...

no problemo... yea of course we all want to keep our fish healthy whether it be flowerhorn or any other cichlid. Another thing to factor in is tank size. If the tank is to small, the fish will not get the excercise it should get.. less swimming etc along with water quality ;)

I totally agree, bad water quality and a tank too small to exercise properly will lead to smaller kok, smaller overall size, pale color, parasites, drooping/weak tail and fin's...and the list goes on.

I feel bad for keeping my 5 inch sb and his 4 inch mate in a 40 breeder to themselves. They really need at least a 55 if not a 75. It's my old reef tank and has a 29 gallon sump/filter so it does have superior filtration but they need more elbow room.

wow, just wow.... haha, looks like your doing just fine with him, keep it up!
