you dont need to cut holes but it is an equally efficient way to pull water thru the gravel. instead of powerheads i use one external pump to push water up thru the bottom, thus creating a rugf. also my tank already has a corner overflow attached to my 30 gal wet/dry.

so chompers, do you use a plate to separate the gravel from the pipe, or do u just pour the gravel on the pipe?

no. it is a closed loop system. also have 4 check valves on the pipes. think that will be enough. actually that is a good question. i wonder if the check valves will hold. now im worried

anyone know if a check valve would hold the valve shut even if the bulkhead is running from the bottom of the tank?
