By the way, I saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Pine Street Theater in Portland on New Year's Eve, 1988. I think that they played with GBH, but I can't remember for sure. Man, I'm starting to feel old...

I wish they'd stuck with their plain alternative rock/psychedelic kinda mid-career sound. I hate their early butt-rock and I hate their older butt-rock. 
My childhood can be summed up into 90s alternative/butt rock so I can't complain.

Oh I am not saying all 90's rock is butt rock. I love all that stuff... Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Social Distortion (more 80's but whatever). Just that early Chili Peppers were.
