Rhino iguana finally home! (pic intense!)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
very nice!

Thanks!

He's a lot more skittish today. I'm leaving him alone, other than changing out his food each morning. I added a human heating pad just outside his hide on the side of the cage, since it was pretty cool in the room this morning. I'm going to order a small reptile heating pad to stick on the glass right there, to give him some night-time warmth. I'm also ordering a UVB light and probably a couple thermometers.

He's eating well on collard greens, mustard greens, red leaf lettuce, and a couple of grapes (he really likes those!). I've also got some cantaloupe I'm going to cut a ball out of tomorrow for him. And some leftover cuttings from some asparagus we made for dinner two nights ago.

Avoid the letuce, even the red one for now and the grapes are only a treat as well only to be used once a week to avoid him getting to much phosphorus. Defenetly use the heat pad and avoid letting food fall into the substrate. Mazuri tortoise food is acording to many a great food for them as well, just soak in water.
Very nice litle iguana, once you have the chance I higly recomed you to build a outdoor enclosure for him :)

Oh man, it is just way too awesome.

Looks great man. Good luck with it.

I'm glad you mentioned making something for the light...having the light like that would drive me nuts in terms of potential fire hazard if it fell especially with the cats around it.

Very very nice! I have always wanted these guys they just look so cool.

Thanks everyone!

From what I've read, the red leaf lettuce is ok? He's mostly getting a mix of collard and mustard greens, with red leaf mixed in. The grapes are just a treat. He got some cantaloupe this morning. Dragged if out of the bowl and down into his hide :screwy:.

I picked up some Reptivite w/D3 today, and am going to be dusting with that regularly. Do I need to dust every meal, or only a couple of times a week?

I did order a heat pad to adhere to the cage. I'm using a human heat pad for now. Should have the new one by the end of the week.

As soon as he starts to settle down and be ok with being handled, I plan on building a nice outdoor enclosure for him. I may look into a small bird cage or other small animal cage to take him outside until I can get a permanent one built.

I did see an "iguana" pellet at my LFS today while I was buying feeders for my fish. I don't remember the brand name, it was either ZooMed or another similar one. I need to do some more research online and find out what pellet foods are recommended. Although I don't mind feeding a varied veggie and fruit diet alone if its perfectly healthy.

I can't wait till next spring, when we can really expand our garden with new foods to grow for him, and build a really nice outdoor enclosure where he can spend time getting real sunlight.

congrats!, best of luck raising him into a tame, healthy adult

Thanks, we're going to do our best.

We're also starting to think about names. We're not sure of the sex of the iguana yet, but I don't think its too big a deal to go ahead and name it. So far our two favorites are Ash and Igby.

Anybody got any other suggestions for us?

Also, at what size/age should we be able to sex this little guy (or gal)?
