Rio Mag growouts

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good luck ...... great looking fish. My rio mag @ 6” has a lot less spotting, but, is developing some nice trailers .... always fun to speculate as they grow and change....

Still not seeing any signs of a protruding egg tube or anything like that on the largest. Do females get this crazy blue scale sheen on them or is it limited to males? I feel like the tile bottom is playing a bit with their coloration, to the point where I can't rely on normal pics of male/female to sex.

I did get one pic of the largest's underside, hoping someone can determine sex from that pic. I zoomed in a bit in hopes it's obvious to someone. Other pic is showing what I mean about the blue scale sheen - not sure if that's limited to males, or if females do get it as well.

Gorgeous fish! What size tank will he end up in?

I'm still trying to decide whether to get some juvies to grow out for my 240G, knowing there's no chance of any more upgrades.

Thanks! I'm thinking a 6x3 would be the logical end size tank, but I may go overboard and get either an 8x2.5 or an 8x3 if I can find one. I'd keep the umbee for life and then go on to use it for something like a shoal of odoe pikes, ATFs, etc.

A 240 gallon is 8x2, correct? That would work for years, but might not be good enough on width for life on a larger male. I'll let experts chime in, as I'm still new to umbees with this guy.

Yes, my 240 is an 8’x2’. I’ve had mixed feedback about whether it would work for life. I do tend to switch things up every few years though, so it may be worth a try.

Any thoughts on how you plan to aquascape for a single male. Steve Poland has a nice set-up on Youtube for his single male. Most umbee tanks I’ve seen are almost empty.
