Genetics show they are originally a hybridization between amphilophus trimaculatum and Cichlasoma beani which happened at least 50k years ago. Over that time they have stabilized and become a defined species in there own rite.
Yeah they do look really nice imo. They seem to be everywhere in that pond and a nice range of sizes (3-8in) even seen one pushing 1ft, could get him to bite sadly. Here's a pic of one that I forgot to take the flash off so the pic doesn't really do them justice, I'll try to get a better pic next time I go out there. This one here was 6in so definitely a decent sized one already.
