heres what i would have done:

isolated him in a seperate tank (if i did have one id run to target and buy a 55 gallon rubbermaid)

maintain temperature at 83F

some salt at 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons ( salt helps with osmoregulation, freshwater fish lose salts when they are stressed)

do melafix and pimafix treatment for about 10 days

try to get him to eat and adjust to his new feeding technique

I think you are wrong on this one. Not even close. The humane thing was just what he did, put the fish out of his misery. The fish had NO mouth at all.

I feel that what you did was in the best interest for the fish.

Yeah, even if the fish did survive and adapt you still have to consider it's quality of life.

sorry for the loss of a beautiful fish........and yes you made the right decision!:)

But you did what was best for the fish.

Im sorry for your loss...

:(

I don't get it....

You covered the tank with a blanket, and the lights were on as usual, and a fish beat up the devil because the devil wasn't acting normal?

I've never heard of anything like that before. Especially of a JD or Pacu biting the face off another fish.
