Riparium Ideas - Setup and Plant Suggestions?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
One thing on the anubias, the small species like anubias nana need really high humidity and perhaps misting to grow above water. I have a small anubias tank which has a tight lid and any leaf that finds itself above water gets burnt leaves even though I almost don't get evaporation, the lid is so tight..Certain other anubias species are actually not aquatic but nana seems to be struggling above water..

Thanks for the heads up. Quick question. Can I afix the anubias to the wood with gorilla glue (gel)? Same goes for the air plants?

I'm sure I read it somewhere but don't want to go poisoning my fish. Equally I don't want to be messing about with cotton - these stumps I've got a pretty large and now in situ in the tank.

Preview of the trunks breaching the surface. Please ignore the bubbles and general poor quality photos. It's all still being built!

Water depth is 15" and air depth is 8". Opinions on that, I'm leaning towards reducing the water level by another inch or two?

I’m suprised no one has mentioned bamboo yet.
I have been using lucky bamboo in my tanks for about two years and they have grown from 2 feet roughly to 5 feet roughly. They do very well in the aquarium and if you can bury the roots then they won’t be touched by the silver dollars. I can actually show you the old set up of my 75 gallon that had pothos and lotus bamboo. I can also show you pictures of back when my lucky bamboo was still set up in my 29 and they looked amazing.

I would really appreciate some photos! Air plants and anubias ordered so far. Open to more suggestions for my shopping list before setting up this weekend!

Here’s the build thread in case you’re interested: https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/custom-150g-shallow-riparium-journal.556741/page-5

The plants did very well for several years, but eventually I had an infestation of thrips that wiped out most of them. One of the few plants that made it through was Colocasia esculenta (taro). Highly recommend that one for an open top large tank - it grows over 2ft tall and looks pretty inpressive.

Damn. Bummer about the thrips. Any tips on dealing with that sort of issue? Encouraging growth of other organisms like scuds or other bugs? I'm pretty new to this in case you can't tell lol.
