I got a ripsaw or a Niger catfish a month ago and is well over a foot. The owner that had him before said he's about 3years old. Last week when I was at aqua world they had a huge ripsaw thier, he had to be about 3ft. How long dose it take for them to get that big? My guy eats the leftovers from my stingray and gets a good amount of carnivorous bottom feeder pellets.

also I'm thinking about maybe getting a giraffe nose catfish, are they the same care wise of the ripsaws?
Thank you!

Mine is close to 24 " and is about 3 years old. How bigs your tank? Care is similar for the giraffe.

I have owned three niger cats. The first ones were about 18" and 24" when they died due to a power failure (we were building a house and the fish were in my parents' barn/shop). I had bought them at the same time as 4" fish, so the growth rate apparently can vary quite a bit.

These pictures are of my latest niger. The first photo is of him at about 5", taken on 12-12-07. The second photo is of him at about 3', taken on 11-21-12 - he now lives in the 12,000G "Flooded Amazon" exhibit at the Oregon Zoo.

This is a great example of why people need to research very well what they are getting. There is only so many fish that outgrow the tanks of the unprepared that a zoo can take. I always shake my head when I see people on here that are going to "upgrade to a 300 next year". This seems to happen with the fish that won't even fit the upgrade after a while. Best laid plans frequently don't happen.
Let me step down from my soap box now. :)

Valid point thats pointed on me. Its alittle hard not to get pissed off when your tring to make me look bad. so thanks for the Reply and go trole to getoff somewere else. dont worry about posting back on this thread to releave your self because you know im right, that not everyone can own a pool and your not just ripping on me but everyone else on here. everyone knows your just acting big fish in a little pond.

Sorry if my point offended you. Not my goal in life. I am not ripping on anyone. A 210 isn't a small tank, I had no idea what you had. Good luck to you.

Let's keep our cool, gentlemen, please. I didn't particularly like the tone/wording in Roger's first post but he is keeping his cool, which me likes tremendously.

3 year old ripsaw should be at least 2' - perhaps it was stunted or underfed. I am not sure now it will reach its full potential - please come back with updates every now and then so we all learn from your experience now! Anyway, 3' takes about 5 years at least in a very good care.

Yes, their care and diet can be quite similar. They love sand and sifting through it.
