So a few weeks ago we had a wave of people in the store asking if we could special order the goonch catfish.

This week, our Goliath tigerfish (that we have had for MONTHS) sold.

I cannot believe the quick interest in these fish just from a 30 minute documentary on it.

If any MFKers from Buffalo, NY bought these fish I would love to know. If not, I am guessing that they end up in the standard "monster" tank which tends to be 55-75 gallons. :wall:

they should know from river monsters how big they get and you'll find out soon if you have people coming in trying to buy like 2,000 gallon tanks

these people are probably thinking the fish will stay small in a tank

i've noticed that the river monster, amazon monsters, and other shows like that have been airing a lot more lately (or i've just noticed it more), and was wondering if this would impact the sales/requests for fish like these. looks like it has begun.

Interesting... Hopefully these people have the means to take care of them.

I mean, if you were to ask in a friendly manner, or indirectly "WOW, you want a goonch huh? You know they get x feet long and eventually need an x by x tank" etc etc.

Who knows, maybe it's the average fish keeper becoming enlightened. You know how many fish enthusiasts don't know about MFK ?

I used to think 500g tanks were huge before I came here !

By no means "monsters" but I sold an adult pair of Oscars and I refused several people before I finally found a good home. I had people wanting to put (2) 12" long fish in a 20 gallon tank based on the 1" per gallon rule. I'm sure I sounded like an arrogant a** but I just wouldn't sell them to anybody. Found a good guy almost a year ago and he and his wife still send me pictures. I feel like such a proud papa!!
So Im sure these new "hobbyists" will bite off more than they can chew!

And did you explain and ask them if they had a tank big enough to sustain a Monster fish???

I am completely certain that they know that they do not have a tank that is big enough. I mean even the most ignorant person must know that the fish should be able to turn around in the tank.

I wish I could understand exactly what these people are thinking. Do they think that the fish grows only as large as the tank and it is healthy? Do they know that it is unhealthy? Do they think that the tank grows with the fish? Do they know that our largest tanks are only 18" wide and that the owner will not buy a larger tank just to home their fish if they decide to sell it back?

We did not special order any goonch catfish and the goliath tigerfish somebody traded in a few months ago. I am sure there are a couple LFS in the area ordering juvi river monsters but I am glad that my store isn't.
