Wait... what?

these SPG roadkill shots (from a field excursion that Richard, Jeremy -one of our friends also shot the SPG dissection vid-, and myself went on last summer). can get into the more detailed story later, but in short, down in IL they make it a point to run over their gars...

WoW now I can deffinately see how it looked like a snake to me at first. when they dry up and look nasty like that the scales really stand out like a snakes. Even the coloration of the scales would make me think it could be a pine snake.

reguardless, sad to see how non-chalantly gar are viewed. I've seen people treat sheepheads in a similar fashion.

When I read roadkill I immediately thought of gars squirming across the street and getting run over.

@Minis -- Yeah, I know what you mean about sheephead, in New York they are regarded as trash fish and many people won't even unhook them out of disgust, just cut their line.

I feel bad for the poor spotted gar.

As for the sheepheads (freshwater drum), they're often used in various college courses for dissections with the goal of getting the fairly large otoliths (part of the ear; sometimes referred to as "lucky stones" and used as good luck charms) which can be used to determine the age of the fish.

Also, will we be finding out the answer to the identity of this mysterious gar from the River Monsters picture?
