Dorados aren't really that rare, but they are overfished and protected in most of South America. The Brazilian populations are now fairly extensively farmed and make up nearly the entirety of the fish imported for the aquarium trade.
Interestingly, in 2007 there was a second species of Golden Dorado described. The Brazilian ones are a separate species than the Argentinian ones.
