I saw a fear factor episode where they had to transfer electric eels from one tank to another. The person that transferred the most eels was the winner, they were about 1.5-2ft if I remember correctly. If I remember correctly a girl won. And Joe Rogan was wondering why all the guy were such pussies so he reached in and grabbed one to see what it was like and he said he did not understand how anyone could do it as it hurt like hell and seized up his arm. But it did not seam dangerous at all and I assume they would not let the people do it if it was all that dangerous. I mean the girl that won got shocked over a dozen times in a matter of a minute or so.
From what I have read, it would take a very large eel to even come close to risk a possible death. And at that, it would need to be a one in a million shock. The amps are to low. It is like being hit with a weak tazer gun. The only real hazard is drowning, since you could loose control of your body and possibly go unconscious for a moment and the fact that the eel can continue to shock you over and over if you happen to fall on it. The shock does not even kill its small prey from what I understand, it just stuns it and if left to recover would likely be fine.
Drowning is the risk, not the shock itself. The show is an EXTREME dramatization and I think being on a channel that people think has factual information about animals and could take it as fact is wrong. Entertaining? Yes. Will I continue to watch it? Yes. Do I role my eyes about 50 times per episode? Yes. Do I think Jeremy is a sell out? Yes, considering he says he is a biologist and still deliberately conveys myth and crap information. Not the best way to represent your self as a respected biologist. I respect him for his angling skills and experience but zero respect as a biologist.
