Hey guys; I know very little about RO Units, but my girlfriend is looking to buy me a RO Unit for christmas but she wants to make sure she gets one that it will be functional for what we need.

So, what are the decent brands? What are affordable but good RO units? I don't need anything amazing, just something to make my water better for my fish; as it is my tap water reads at least 1.0 ppms of ammonia at any given time, so an RO unit is really almost a necessity for fishkeeping at my new place.

Also, do I need an RO/DI, or is RO alone fine? Sorry and thanks guys, I really am a little clueless when it comes to Reverse Osmosis systems. Any info/advice will be exponentially appreciated!

for Saltwater yes, for freshwater no.

What would you recommend for someone who has tap water that is consistently never below 1.0 PPM? In this new place I am having a nearly impossible time trying to cycle my tanks because the ammonia is constantly riddiculous high...I do water changes every day but can't get the water below 1.0 in any of the tanks because nothing less than 1.0 ever comes out of the tap water.

Buying distilled or RO water is not really an option for me to do consistently. Would an RO Unit still not be worth it? Because I am really stuck here, I have never had a problem like this before at my old house...

I belive you use an ro unit when using an automatic drip system on Fw tanks to avoid using prime. Could you imagine having to constantly prime.:nilly:

Maybe get a 200 litre/55 gallon barrel and a 1000-1500lph internal or canister filter, fill the barrel with conditioned tap water and leave the filter running on it to process the ammonia, leaving you with relatively clean water for doing water changes with.

i use an RO/DI filter for ALL of my water.. even my own drinking and cooking water. we have an ammonia problem in our tap water too. almost lost a bunch of fish because of it.

anyway.. i got a Water General 100 GPD system. this is the system i bought 2 years ago. http://cgi.ebay.com/WATER-GENERAL-A...801?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51968edbf9

i change the filters and the DI resin about once a year, and the RO membrane every other year. i test my water regularly, when the DI resin starts to wear out the TDS ppm goes up. usually it's about 3 ppm.

ro for saltwater is really all u need.

if you search drip system most people have a pump that matches perfectly put the right amount of prime in with how much water is getting put in.
