I'm Where I'm At
Crikey!

You know I remember watching Steve Irwin before he got famous and had a rather amateur camera crew. He would do a lot more daring stuff than he did in is later days. Like dive head first into a swamp and tackle croc's on their own turf. It was on some odd channel at like 2-3am. I told all my work buddies and they thought I was crazy, fast forward a couple years and Steve was on Animal Planet and making headlines.

Also I don't think it if fair to place any of the Irwins in the same category as the Kardashians or Snooki. I hope the best for him and his family, I thought Bindi would have been the break out. Stevs dad is a good man too.
i'm not putting them in the same category, but i'm just saying if the kardashians and jersey shore used an opportunity to get rich, this kid has the right also. and if he happens to find a niche or a gimmick that will work for him and he can make a living out of, who are we to judge?

Hello; Kinda interesting how there are so many ways to look at Steve Irwin. I have been the sort who figured it best to leave wildlife alone. Take a picture and/or study them sure but do not chase them down and handle them for a show.
I know there are times when doing research that animals need to be captured, measured or tagged. I always hope it is for a legit reason needed for the data. I never got the feeling that was why he handled the animals.
I use to kinda root for the snakes he was bothering. Not a fatal bite, just one that would help focus his mind a bit. A stingray got him I believe.

As for his son doing the same sort of thing? Not sure I will feel any different if he goes about it the same way. Might watch once if he starts a show, but it will have to be a slow TV day.

The philosophy wasn't about conservation. It was about exposing the animals to people and getting them interested enough to believe in conversation, much like a lecturer vs. a philosopher. Steve was a showman with a passion and he figured out the perfect way to get his message across.
Here's a thread with a video explaining it in detail.

Hello; That is one way to look at it for sure. I wonder how many tried to pick up snakes after watching Irwin and got nailed. Might be some benefit from that. Maybe like your post in another thread about letting natural selection sort things out.

Who am I to say. Left up to me Elvis would not have been king. Madonna and Prince would have had to get another job.

I use to catch snakes when I was a dumb kid. Never got a bite and quit pushing my luck when I discovered cars and girls. Come to think of it the snakes may have been safer to play with.

Probably a whole heck of a lot cheaper too!
The stingray that got Steve Irwin is at ripleys aquarium. Look

Is that the actual ray that stung Irwin or is it merely the same species?

If that were the real ray that tagged Steve I would Harambe that mofo
LOL!....I seem to recall the real ray to be a whole lot bigger than what this one looks to be.
