Rock Bass

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
nice lil guy. How come the eye is red?

I always wanted to keep a rock bass. When I was in lake George I caught a bunch. Even though they are really a perch I will consider it a bass and say this is the only type of bass I have ever caught.

I know some people locally call all sunfish perch, but technically rock bass are sunfish, and perch are a completely different family (which broadly include fish in the family percidae - walleye, all the way down to darters; but more technically encompass the genus perca - yellow perch and a couple similar species ). If it was a universally used and understood common name I would think it acceptable, but it's used sporadically from region to region. When you use the word perch many people think completely different fish such as the yellow perch, not sunfish or bass, so it causes confusion. Where I'm from sunfish are almost never referred to as perch, and when I moved here I had no clue what people were referring to at first.

So to limit confusion it's best to call fish in the sunfish (centrarchidae) family sunfish (bluegill-like fish (Lepomis sp), rock bass, and black bass (lmb, smb, spotted, etc.), are all sunfish). Whereas true bass are species such as the yellow bass, white bass, and striped bass.

Rockbass naturally have red eyes....so do redeye bass, cool huh?! Ive always thought that if more people saw how cool some of our natives look, more people would have them.

haha yup, their names are self explanatory :P

here in Frostburg, some of the locals call the rock bass, the red eye bass.. like shadowbass pointed out, all these general names can create one hell of a mess lol

Check out my new thread in the media lounge. I've got a pic with my sub adult shadow bass, which is a different species of Ambloplites. Since you thought they were cool looking I thought you might be interested in seeing.
The shadow bass stays smaller (an 8" specimen is exceptional), and IME are not at all aggressive, compared to some of the comments I've seen on regular rock bass.

If I was anywhere near where you live I'd take her, but that would be quite a drive ATM, :) . If you can't find someone to take her for their tank, consider finding someone with a pond, as she should do fine in there. Just don't release into the wild of course.

nice rock bass. i have one too that i just received and I'm growing it out temporarily in a ten as it is only an 1" long. unfortunately mine is not one of the red eye variants which I'm bummed about but i wanted a small one and this is all i could get. i have him eating bloodworms and he really loves the high current in my tank.
