I have a 125 gallon long aquarium, the glass being 3/8 of an inch thick. My fathers concern was that the rocks in the tank might weigh too much (they're somewhere around 40 pounds) and would crack the glass either themselves or by pushing the gravel into the glass.

If anyone has any idea, that would be great.

thanks

As long as the weight is distributed evenly and not focused on a single point, then your good.

When i bought my 100 gal a few years back the guy i bought it from had big rocks in it and he put a layer or that plastic egg crate stuff alot of guys use as dividers on the bottom so none of the rocks were actually touching the bottom and the weight was distributed around better.. Just a thought for ya..

:iagree:

and you can also use rocks of different shapes to make even better caves.:)

I'd be more worried about that rock in the back corner falling during a water change, maintenance, etc. But like the others have said, 40 lbs of rock will be fine as long as the weight is even. The egg crate stuff is fantastic to use....I have it in my 125 and it relieves a lot of worry!

Point pressure is the concern with heavy rocks. Egg crate or UGF plates under the rocks will distribute the weight more evenly across the glass for more peace of mind.

Even with point pressure minimized with a plastic (possibly foam?) egg crate solution, would the glass be able to hold the pressure, just in general terms?
