ROPE FISH 911!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would agree 5 years is a milestone but I've kept ropes and they are a tough tough fish. Assuming the parasites aren't advanced you can easily get a rope to 2-4 years, I've done that many times with near complete neglect(by my standards the fish where never in anything under 55 gallons) I only came to understand the swim bladder issue that ended most of my ropes lives was a result of internal parasites thanks to a very knowledgeable and talented hobbiest. I've never had any luck reactively treating disease on this animal. Not saying it can't be done but in my limited experience it can't be done reactively. I would recommend looking to advanced bichir keepers for advice on the rehabilitation of this animal. The issue I always encountered was that most internal parasites can only be effectively dealt with by the fish ingesting medicine and once a rope shows symptoms they always stop eating for me. I think that bichir and ray keepers would have a better understandings of medicines you could use with this sensitive animal.

I have kept 1 rope before and would agree that when it floats it's pretty much dead.

The only thing I have ever read that has worked is gently force feeding the animal medicated frozen peas.

This animal is amazing in that if you keep the water clean and chemical free you could put him in a rubber maid tub with a sponge filter. A large tub would give him allot more real estate. Just a cheap alternative. Might help in treating him. A 50 gallon tub is less than 20 bucks I think and you could get a sponge filter for 8 bucks. Air stone and pump for another 10-20 bucks. Not a bad alternative for the fish. To accelerate the cycle of the sponge filter start it in your 15 gallon tank for a week before moving it to your new tank/tub.

I had 2 in a 55 gallon tank, on is dying as I send this message....although it's not floating at the top.....it's head first into the gravel bead, it's breathing is labored and it's not moving at all.
