Rope fish feeding help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I know this is an old thread, but I just found it. This is what I did. I bought a 'reptile home', basically looks like a flat rock but is hollow underneath and has an 'door' on one side. I put this in the water and pushed it into the gravel (making sure to not trap any air), and pushed the gravel up to cover the door. Then I used my finger to push away some of the gravel to expose a small opening (too small for my other fish to get in). The Rope Fish love to hang out in there, and I used a hollow tube to deliver blood worms into the hole (where the others could not get to it). Then I got floating plants. They love to hang out in them, and will dig through them to eat blood worms left there. Then I trained them to come to tapping the top of the water, but that is another thread!

I recently snagged a rope to draw the attention away from my bichirs because my wolf liked to push em around, literally, wouldnt bite but would just push. There happened to be one big enough to hold its own (at about 12 inches) so i picked it up, its eating well, brine shrimp cubes and earthworms. It may have snagged a guppy i bred before my wolf (red hi fin) and bichirs got them all.

I would go with earthworms, bloodworms would be great if theyll take em, i personally think they make too much of a mess but thats just my own preference, brine shrimp, tilapia, try to eventually get it on pellets though. You can help egg this on without starving by sneaking pellets into tilapia or earthworms so they get used to the taste. Mine has not been a shy eater as my bichirs are (ornate and gold dust). Hell munch anything in front of me, even hand feed him when my wolf was full. For sure a cool fish, i dont know why they arent more popular, the only survivng member of the genus. I would LOVE to see more species discovered

wow didnt realize this was a really old thread lol

Great info everyone on feeding your ropes, this will give other's including myself confidence in wanting to keep this poly relative:) Thanks Again

I currently have 2 ropes. I have had zero problems with feeding. They aren't shy at all. The biggest one likes to wrap around my arm when I gravel vac. It took about 2 weeks, and now they come right out at feeding time. They compete with a Severum, Oscar, EBJD, and bichir without any issues.
