I'm thinking about getting a rather large royal soon for my 180 and have a few questions for all you pleco-fanatics.

Do they need wood in the tank?

If so what kind of wood should I get?

Would they do well with sand?

Thanks in advance!

Yes they need wood. Driftwood. Bogwood. Moapani wood.
Sand is ok.
They produce a lot of waste (poop saw dust). You may want to aquascape so that all the poop is pushed to a corner for easier clean-up, or perhaps consider a pipe/valve near the bottom corner of the tank that for clean-up.

You probably want to give them an option of one of the softer driftwoods. Some of the dense stuff is great for aquascaping because it sinks easily. However it may not the easiest for the plecos to eat. I think just one small standard piece should be sufficient and use what looks best to you for the rest of the tank.

I use mopani, Malaysian, manzanita, maple, oak and even fresh or dead willow which they go crazy over.

I've had mine for years and have never seen a missing tooth or red mouth so hoe hard the wood is doesn't matter.

I also have a couple in a 150g. In addition to a couple of big pieces of driftwood that I've had in there for some tiem, I recently dropped a new big piece of wood into the tank and they hang from it...

I also feed them cucumber and I'm sure they get some of the Xtreme pellets that the other fish in the tank get.

Mine are probably 8" - they seem to be really slow growing. How about other folks?

Also, anyone else keep more than one in a tank? I have two that the prior owner suspected were a male and female...

I keep a large group together no issues at all.

One suggestion I have is stop with the cucumber. It's got no real nutritional value to it. Your better off with carrots, potato white/sweet and other veggies. All given raw of course
