Royals-do they need wood?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I keep a large group together no issues at all.

One suggestion I have is stop with the cucumber. It's got no real nutritional value to it. Your better off with carrots, potato white/sweet and other veggies. All given raw of course

Jackson I have seen pics of your royals on another forum(arofanatics I believe) and they look incredible! How long have you had them?
Matt, I have a xingu royal, and 2 common royals and am picking up a gold line this weekend--super excited about that. I have them all in seperate tanks but will be putting them together soon.
I keep mopani, manzanita and Malaysian with my royals and am going to start treating a bit of cherry wood to put with them when I put them together. Aside from that they get zucchini nightly as well as carrots. I've been trying to get them to take apples as well but they won't have anything to do with them. I also regularly give them spinach and romain. Ill have to give potatoes and sweet potatoes a try.

I feed my for L190 a staple of hikari wafters and NLS mega fish formula (alternating nights) and courgette once a week, maybe twice when it's in the garden or cheap at the markets. Mine have never seemed to have trouble devouring our native hardwoods like Manuka and Pohutukawa, in fact it is almost scary to look at some of my old pieces of wood and realise how much bigger they once were!

Do you blanch your potato/sweet potatoes at all?

No I never do that. I personally don't see the reason in doing that.

IME hikari can cause bloating in panaque.
NLS mega fish is my preferred pellet to feed my panaque.

Iv had two for about 10 years two 330's
The rest I've had between 2-6 years and some recent additions this past week.

Thanks for the kind words as well. I'd post some pics here but not too many are interested in panaque until now.

This is one of my recent additions.

I'd like to see pics of everyone's panaque here. It would be nice to start a community thread

Wow! :-o Another stunner. That things gorgeous and pretty burly! I can't wait to see what mine look like after a few years. I just last week picked up a Xingu Royal and he's got a lot of reds. Really nice looking but still only about 5". Ill try to snap some pics of my Panaques as I see them. ;) Thanks for the reply.

Interesting, first I've heard of Hikari wafers being no good, I was more concerned about the NLS as it isn't a specific herbivore food. Can you elaborate on your experience? Do you know of anyone else who has had problems with them?

I'll gladly join in if someone starts a "Panaque Show-Off" thread, always keen to see pics of them!
