RTC HELP

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Constantly staying up on the sides, especially if head down indicates a territorial issue. The sub dominant fish has no where to go. You could add some 600mm diameter PVC pipe (pretty expensive unless you find off cuts from large building developments) which sink well or cut both ends of several 55 gallon barrels which would then need to be weighed down. Another option is to add more RTC fish to overcrowd. Happy fish will all pile into a pipe together tightly.

If your using feeders, the RTC will eat whenever hungry. I add some green peas once a week and home made pellets (I have a pellet mill) occasionally. Feeding your feeders a good diet is sufficient to overcome RTC food deficiencies.

Honestly THANK YOU so much man this was great advice and as far as money fish get spoiled so I'll buy the first option!

ALSO! I loved it because I said nothing about fights and you got it spot on the RTC recently started fighting the jardini as jardini had been dominate

I use tinfoil barbs & ID sharks as feeders because both are fast swimmers & prolific breeders.

Let me know when you want to breed RTC's, we can have an off line discussion.

If you breed your own goldfish and ensure their health, and also feed the goldfish good quality feed, then you could be safe as far as pathogen transfer from prey to predator and as far as short term malnutrition. The long term malnutrition you are not safe with because overall goldfish is a rather poor diet for a tropical predator and also carries the thiaminase issues, as noted above.

Don't mean to insult you, you may know all this. If not, or not quite, the relevant sticky threads in the Diseases forum carry a lot of solid info on feeding goldfish.

As far as your RTCs, what you describe may or may not be normal. RTC appetite waxes and wanes naturally. But they also maybe developing vitamin B1 deficiency and/or too much fat deposits from the goldfish.
Hey could you look at this video and tell me why he is doing that? https://youtube.com/shorts/5AC4Y0fsXA0?feature=share

Looked like just an itch. Although he does look on the skinny side. As still only a baby he probably looking at a decent meal every 2-3 days. Something like a fillet of whitefish size.
Might not be long before he is seeing the bass or jardini as his next meal.

The RTC simply had an itch on top of the head and had to scratch a little, is all. If it does it once in a while or once in a blue moon, this is normal. If often, then there is a parasite that irritates its skin and this needs to be addressed.

Yea he hasn't been wanting tilapia or anything for a week now

This is rather not normal for a young RTC and may warrant troubleshooting. Loss of appetite can occur for many reasons.
