RTC Ill Again

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
your talking to people who know about the habits of RTC's :D I'm asking for the information purpose only as some people beleive that their RTC is different than the others, Keep up with your water changes and try to keep it (ammonia) as low as possible, I would actually try to seed the filter with some biomass from another tank ASAP as well...

has your RTC been throwing up at all?

See Wolf3101 about keeping anything in the tank dead or alive.........

There are only two kinds of fish in the world...Redtailed cats and Redtailedcatfood...

His normal feeding habits were Five times a fortnight 3-4 day intervals 6-7 tiger prawns shelled but raw, or 3-4 prawns and a chunk of boned non oily fish.

That is a VERY true quote...and my RTC Lucy has a large tank all to herself for this reason. About the only thing safe...even for a short time...with a RTC is a fish larger than the RTC. The problem is finding a fish who can keep up with the RTC growth rate. Not many of them can.

What size is this RTC?

Thats more than I feed Lucy and she's 20" long...

I'd say keep up with the large water changes. I do about 50% weekly myself.

Oop's I just noticed that post... So the RTC's close to the same size as Lucy. A 6x2x2 would be a 180 gallon tank

A 5x2x2 or a 4x2x2.5 is a 150 gallon. A 6x2x2 is a standard 180.

Yes started to throw up before showing more extreem symptoms??
Water changes are paramount when you see them throwing up as they pollute their water extremely quickly, this might not account for the filter crash but it would prob account for things getting worse.
The acid which is released into the tank water is horribly bad for everything in there...

This is extremely important. You should do a large water change immediately after a throw up. It's like an instant ammonia skyrocket. Keep up the water changes. Like everyone else said seed your filter, cut back on feedings until better, when you do water changes to help with skin irritation use a water treatment with aloe in it. Stress coat comes to mind.
