I was looking to get a rtc and put it in a 125g tank right now I have a 125g tank with a longnose gar and a blue channel cat and I was wondering how would a rtc work it there and how long would it be until he outgrew the tank?

Depends on what size the rtc is when you get it and how fast it grows. Most will grow 1.5"-3" per month in their first year. So short answer is probably less than 6 months to a year if you're lucky enough

well if the tank is 18" wide i say you have till the RTC is about 19-20" until you would have to upgrade to atleast a 2' wide tank. i was told that tippically you dont want the fish to exceed 3" longer then the width of the tank

Hmmm, it would work, but do you really want your rtc rubbing against the glass everytime it trys to turn? I've seen big ones with sores from this. Typically you don't want it to touch tip of nose to front and tip of tail to the back. You can cause undue stress to your fish by keeping it in too small of a tank. Most sites actually recommend that you have twice the length of the fish from front to back of the aquarium and 4 x the lenth for the length of the aquarium. I don't go that far, but then again that would be in a perfect world. Size for an adult would be minimum of 8-10' x 4' x 3'. IMO anyway.

oh in saying all of this a 125 gal is a wonderful starter tank for rtc though. Lots of space for a small one, but will also give you enough time to make other plans or build a large tank or pond.

thanks for the correction. thats what i was told by someone on here a while abck. i too am about two put to 6" RTC's in my 125 as a growout. not sure what other fish i want along with them though. any ideas?

Something that grows close to the same rate, and can't be eaten. Pacus, tsn, ect. All this would mean a huge tank in the works by you unless you know someone who is going to take these off your hands when they get too big.

i plan on having a temp intex pool until i can either make a huge tank in the garage or a pond in the back... not a huge fan of pacus tho. and dont want any more cats. anyting else i can put in there that say wouldnt top like mid 20's that would be safe from the RTC?

Do you guys think that would be a good growout tank for the longnose gar and a blue channel cat and a rtc and where could I find a very small rtc for cheap cause right now my gar is about 5" and the channel cat is about 3" so I was looking for one about 2-3" any help? I was looking to spend under $30?

umm i bought 3 from my LFS at 3.4" a couple weeks ago. 1 didnt make it but i still have 2. normally you can either get them ordered from your LFS and from my experience they do sell them at the around 3.5-4" mark
