RTC long term growth..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Agreed. Funny :) but seriously tank-kept fish cannot be released back in the wild even if native there. They can carry very different bacterial and parasitic cultures to which feral fish have no immunity. Sorry about being pedantic :)

Worth a try but not likely. Large Public Aquaria never or almost never deal with amateur fish keepers. They deal amongst themselves when it comes to stocking. Just like the zoos do with their animals. A small Public Aquarium like mine, which is also a fish rescue and re-homing center, do it.

There are enthusiasts in every state who rescue large fish, like Ted in Seattle (http://www.anythingfish.com/), BigRich - a member here, Ohio, Johathan Strazinsky of former MosterFishRescue, Ohio, like I did in Rochester NY and now do it in FL, etc. etc. Just need to find the closest to you.

It doesn't get that cold in SLC in the winters. My grandmother in North Salt Lake had an outdoor pond filled with various types of Koi and goldfish and they made it over the winters. Granted her pond was in ground which helped verse an above ground for the winters.

Could do an outdoor above pool for the summer and then put it in the garage for the winter or dig an in ground pond and heat that.

Kois and gold fish are totally different from RTC's.

Lol, it does not get cold in the winter here?? Well then again you live in a stupid cold area, Lets see we had a month or more and it was like 10 degree weather at the high. Outside pond will never happen. Cheapest thing is buying a pond liner and building a frame for that. Would be a fun project. I have seen too many cats here on ksl. But as much as I like them I'm not man enough to even get one for free. Maybe its just that I'm smart.

Koi and goldfish lowest survivable temp is about 36 F - they are temperate water fis who adapt superbly to sub-tropical an tropical climates. RTC will not survive for long even at 60-65 F - it is a tropicl fish that cannot adapt to cold water.

i have a koi pond too and even with a horse trough warmer in it my pond partially froze last winter... got pretty dang cold... my concern with a garage pond or any pond that is not in a heated part of the house it would cost a fortune to try to keep it warm enough for him.... I am going to keep my options open as far as other tanks ponds homes ect... and just enjoy him for now... incredibly personable fish... also going to try to vary his diet more... been feeding him anchovies or smelt from the asian market... while he loves em and they are cheap... it cant be the most balanced diet avail... thinking about breaking down and buying some massivore pellets... maybe some beefheart??? I used to have a florida gar that really preferred all beef hotdogs to most anything else I offered.... the Pbass didnt really care for the hotdogs... but the RTC might enjoy an occasional hotdog...

One can insulate well. You could read the endeavors of Ted from Seattle who has outdoor tropical tanks of 2000-8000 gal: anythingfish.com

The bad actor in non-aquatic foods is fat. One should probably also be aware of the thiaminase issues. Anyway, RTCs eat any and all, normally or with little coersion. Massivore is not necessary. Ordinary pellets and varied diet of various aquatic foods will do. One can use a vitamin soak if really needed too.
