Its a standard 125

How big is the RTC, Russ?

I don't doubt in some states that may happen some day. The biggest problem with it is, who gets to decide what is an adequate sized aquarium? If they have any sense at all it will be me. :D

It's not only the size. Just as with mammals, birds, reptiles, etc., the cruelty to which is enforced, the animal police has guidelines to follow. It may be gray area for many but not for them. People go to jail for animal abuse so this prosecution process must be based on VERY concrete evidence. I'd think when it comes about, the executive branch of our government will listen to the professionals, not us hobbyists. Still, I'd vote for you Commissioner Roger... if you weren't so grumpy at times ;)

Honestly its one of the larger rtc's ive seen in person...solid 32-34". They take decent care of him if ive seen him since 2011. Pretty positive it was $450 one time and $350 all the others. I agree with u TBTB, its a ploy/attraction for buisness. Sad, but were all part of the fish trade :). A thousand more rtc's will be sold to people with 10gals and life goes on lol...cant save em all, ive tried. More just show up the next day so i stopped taking in "rescues".

Yep. I agree. Thanks for the info. Education / awareness alone will not succeed on a large scale because it cannot be forced on people who don't want it. So I think it will have to go hand in hand with legislature, both for the delivery chain and the end consumer, just as with many other animals.

At $350 it won't be taken any time soon.

For the sake of reference, a proper shop attraction is expensive but more honest, e.g., the 2000 gal tank at The Fish Place, Tonawanda (Buffalo), NY, or ~1500 gal pond at the entrance to Seascape Aquarium & Pet Center, Sarasota, FL, or Lou's Pet Shop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JG5Dz5Iwol4... all of these featuring large RTCs.

But this has been debated to death. So we should probably stop.

I was just there yesterday....they have TWO RTCS and what I believed to be a black devil cat in the same 90ish gallon tank...all 3 were in the 25" range...couldnt even turn around...then in the same size tank next to it they have a shovel/rtc hybrid and again what I think was another black devil cat, same size fish...this store is hands down one of the WORST I've seen...they had a display tank out front with 4-5" florida gar, probably 20 5" brown knifes, and 2 of the most sickly armatus I've ever seen...eye bulge and bloat to no end....that tank is probably a 65...maybe.

The problem is- where do laws on keeping fish end? No RTC in home aquariums? What about all the other "tankbuster" fish species out there? If that happens, there will be a new website in place of this one that lines up with one of the forums. MINI-MONSTER FISH KEEPERS! I do agree that it's completely wrong to keep a fish like that particular RTC in that small of an aquarium, but as usual, where do you draw the line? If you banned the RTC in home aquariums, what about me and the others on this site and other similar websites that DO have the means to keep them? I don't own a Redtail Catfish, but I have before. Before it got too large for my aquarium , I nailed it to a tree in the yard and used pliers to skin it so I could cook it and eat it(meat was really red BTW). That way, it didn't have to stay in too small of a tank and suffer! Lol!!! Not really. That's the reason I only keep bottle nosed dolphins and SMALL tiger sharks now. Lol! Not really, again. Kidding.

Hopefully that's not a picture of your snakehead in your profile picture! THEY have already banned those in these United States! Joking,of course. Just kidding.

Just frustrated seeing fish kept for years in under sized aquariums, but you do make a valid point.

Frustrates me to no end as well. Along with lots of other things I don't have much control over. We're all on the same team though. We all don't like it. Well 99% of us. The other 1% are the same ones keeping the big fish in too small of a tank. Usually for a status symbol . Thanks.
