Other than that, the pool I have set up seems to leak everytime I look at it. It's more of a pain than anything. I would have spent less money just making the pond I am making now than buying the cheap pool I have and keep repairing it, and having to do things to it. Going to build a relatively cheap 3000 gal tank. With around a 500-800 gal filter.

That was my reason for jumping straight into building a pond.I figured that I would have problems with a temp pool.. I know I have some since Mine will grow out in the 270 but time but with the cost and time to build a pond... I'd like to have some free time to spend with my son to LOL... oh yeah and the Wife :grinno: (as I'm being pinched into saying :D)

you all have them in "pond type" homes, i would that that wouldnt be as cool as a tank because you can really see them..i could be wrong, but it jus seems like you couldnt really see the fish from the surface.

I know this should be in another thread but i jus found this, liveaquaria.com a place i think is very respectful in terms of knowledge of fish, says a TSN can live in a 180.....thats wrong isnt it? sorry bout this random question, i jus didnt want to make a thread

You can keep a RTC in a 500 long for life with no problems at all. The one you saw at 3 foot long is relitivly common but larger ones become incresingly difficult to find. You might well HEAR about or read on line about the mythical 6 foot long monster cats but your not likely to ever see one.
The increadable growth rate of the RTC slows WAY down once they hit the 24" mark or so.

Those of us who share our lives with the big cats...totally understand what your saying about meeting one for the first time in person. The RTC is DEFINATLY a fish that you have to expierance first hand to fully appreciate....

They are a pain in the butt to house and expencive to keep....why else would we bother putting up with all of this if not for ths special nature of the relationship they have with thier owners.

i hear that...i dont even own one ahahha, my girlfriend yells at me enough for talking about how awesome it was, i cant even imagine if i had a catfish like a rtc! before i saw that RTC i didnt really understand u guys n cats, i usualy am into P.s, but that has since changed!

I was in the same boat till I met Buster... then it was something that I couldn't explain... I'm not the impulsive buy type but I needed to take him right away :D That silly little RTC smile and the way that they seem to just attract your attention.

Best Thing i ever did with my aquarium addiction

basslover maybe you shouldnt talk to me, your a terrible influence hahahahahahahhah (completely joking!!!!) too bad they didnt make dwarf RTC's

I could easilly see a RTC living it's whole life in a 250 gallon pallette tank....

4' x 4' x 2'...nylon (available on Ebay for just under $200.00) In fact this would only enhance the interaction IMO. The problem with keeping big cats in ponds...(besides the question of heating them during the winter)... is that you lose a LOT of that close interaction when they have other fish to entertain them and a ton of room to move around. I'm NOT recomending the pallette tank as the ideal situation but it's certianly possible and far more affordable, not to mention, DURABLE than a lot of the other options.

I have also reciently concidered the, very real, possibillity of combining two of these units into a single 8' x 4' x 2' tank. It's not as complicated or difficult as you might think.
Think about it... a 500 gallon tank for under 400.00 plus filtration, inexpencive lighting and a weekends worth of work.....

Some of you are talking about housing a cat that can live for 20 years or more in an inflatable pool that has, at BEST, a life expectancy of a year and a half?

I'd hate to disagree with you on the 4'X4'X2' for life statment... there is NO swimming room at all for a 3ft fish in a 4 ft tub.
